What if your busyness is actually a form of hiding?

Overcommitment is Just Smart Procrastination

Beware the barrenness of a busy life. — Socrates

Sometimes we overcommit not because we’re driven—but because we’re scared to slow down.

For a long time, I filled my schedule to the brim. The full calendar, the endless tasks, always saying yes—it made me feel useful, in control, even productive. But beneath all that motion, I was avoiding the things that made me feel unsure, unready, or exposed. The project I didn’t know how to start. The decision I was afraid to make. The version of myself I wasn’t sure I could grow into.

I see this in others, too. Overcommitting becomes a quiet form of hiding. It shields us from the discomfort of stillness—because stillness often brings clarity. And clarity can be confronting.

It doesn’t need fixing—it just needs your honesty. Once you start to notice what you’re avoiding, you begin to take back your power to choose differently.

The “Real Yes” Check-In

Here’s one way to pause before you default to another yes:

  • Pause. Give yourself a moment before responding.
  • Ask: If this were the only thing I committed to this week, would it still be worth it?
  • Notice: Does this choice energize me—or just make me feel useful?
  • Name: Is there anything I might be using this to avoid?

A friend recently told me they’d agreed to a team project—not because they cared about it, but because it let them delay working on something they were scared to start. Seeing that clearly helped them step back—and finally make space for what actually mattered.

When you practice this filter, you might feel less scattered, more anchored, and more honest about where your time is going.
Every Real Yes is a step toward alignment—not just accomplishment.

Reflection:

"What might your overcommitment be protecting you from—and what would you notice if you stopped to listen underneath it?"

If this kind of pause has been hard to come by lately—and it’s tough to slow down on your own—I get it. You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.

If it ever feels like the right time to talk, I offer free 1:1 calls. No pressure. No fixing. Just a chance to say things out loud and name what’s been weighing on you. Just reply if that sounds good. I’ll meet you where you are.

It starts with one small action.

Not a big breakthrough. Not the perfect plan. Just one step that aligns with who you want to become. You don’t need to say more—just start doing.
