When the Plan Becomes the Problem
On paper, planning should feel empowering. You sketch out the week, choose your priorities, and map the path forward. And yet, many people discover a strange contradiction: the very act of planning leaves them stuck.
I once worked with my client who dedicated every Sunday evening to carefully crafting a flawless schedule — balanced, color-coded, and inspiring. But by midweek, the plan felt like a burden. Unexpected meetings arrived, energy dipped, or priorities shifted. Instead of feeling supported, she felt judged by her own notebook.
It’s not unusual. Planning often creates the illusion of control, but it can also become a clever way of postponing action. Psychologist Barry Schwartz writes about this paradox: when possibilities multiply, paralysis often follows.
Here’s the deeper layer — we don’t just fear making the “wrong” plan. We fear sitting with the discomfort of not knowing what matters most right now.
So planning becomes performance: the search for the perfect structure, instead of the practice of presence.
A Metaphor to Hold
Imagine standing in front of a closet packed with clothes. Some still have tags, some no longer fit, some you love but rarely wear. You open the door, but instead of clarity, you feel heaviness.
Planning can feel the same. The clarity doesn’t arrive before the choice — it shows up after you’ve stepped into it. The “right outfit” for the day is discovered by wearing it, not by endlessly scanning hangers.
This week, notice when you’re lingering in the closet of possibilities. Try closing the door sooner, step forward with what you chose, and let clarity meet you in motion.
